Patio & Paving Installation in Wiltshire

Professionally Designed Patios in Wiltshire

You don’t install a patio because you need more concrete. You do it because you want to turn your garden into somewhere you actually want to be: a place to start the morning with a coffee in the sunshine, to enjoy evenings unwinding with friends over dinner under fading light.

That’s what a well-designed patio delivers. Not just a surface to stand on, but an extension of your home, carefully planned around how you live.

At Acres Ahead, we’ve been designing and laying patios across Wiltshire for over a decade, from Bath (BA1) to Devizes, Chippenham, Calne, and beyond. Our work is measured not just in square metres, but in moments: relaxed breakfasts, celebrations under string lights, quiet corners for reading or reflection.

If your current patio is cracked, uneven, or just no longer fits the way you want to use your garden then it might be time to rethink it. If not from scratch, then upgraded with materials that suit your home’s character, construction that stands up to Wiltshire weather, and attention to detail so precise that the finish looks effortless.

Create a Patio That Feels Like Part of Your Garden

How often have you looked out of the back door thinking “I wish I could use this space more.”

A well-planned patio does more than add hard standing. It:

  • Connects your home to the garden, making transitions between indoor and outdoor living feel right.
  • Creates a dedicated zone for outdoor dining, coffee breaks, or evening drinks.
  • Gives a purpose to awkward corners, underused slopes, or spaces overshadowed by trees.
  • Turns an ageing surface into something fresh, functional and family-friendly.

We’ve worked on everything from compact urban courtyards in Bath to sprawling country garden terraces near Corsham. In every case, our goal is to create a space you’ll actually want to be in.

Patio Paving to Suit Your Home, Garden & Style

Choosing the right paving is less about trends and more about matching your home’s character and how you plan to use the space.

Here are the options we most commonly recommend in Wiltshire:

Porcelain Paving

Clean, contemporary, and low-maintenance.

If your home has clean lines or modern extensions, porcelain paving gives you consistency in colour and texture, with no variations to worry about and minimal cleaning. It’s increasingly popular for its slip-resistant finish, large-format slabs (great for open-plan feel), and ability to mimic stone or timber with remarkable realism.

We lay it on a full mortar bed with edge restraints and flexible jointing compound to ensure it looks seamless and stays put for years.

Indian Sandstone & Natural Stone Paving

Character, warmth, and timeless appeal.

There’s something special about natural stone, especially sandstone. The subtle veining, warm beiges and russets, and soft textures that age nicely in Wiltshire’s climate.

It works really well with the period homes and traditional gardens in towns like Devizes or Royal Wootton Bassett. The trade-off is slight variation across batches, but that’s part of its charm.

Limestone & Granite

Refined elegance for different settings.

Light-coloured limestone brings a fresh, airy feel to contemporary gardens, while granite offers a bolder statement with its dense grain and durability. Both are excellent for high-traffic areas or where you want clean geometry (think geometric patterns or linear borders).

We select each stone carefully. It’s not just about how it looks, but for how well it will work in your soil and exposure.

Concrete & Block Paving

Practicality with personality.

For budget-conscious projects or more utilitarian zones, like behind a garage or beside a shed, concrete paving offers a lot of versatility. We use high-grade, frost-resistant blocks, laid with proper falls for drainage and edged to keep them in place.

It’s often the most cost-effective solution, without sacrificing quality or finish

Not sure which one suits you?

We’re happy to walk you through options before any commitment. Bring photos of your garden, a rough idea of budget, and tell us how you’d like to use the space. There’s no such thing as a “wrong” question at this stage, only clues that help us guide you better.

Designed Around More Than Just the Paving

A patio doesn’t exist in isolation. The best ones integrate with the wider garden, making it feel coherent, not compartmentalised.

There are various featrues we can include:

  • Steps and retaining walls to manage level changes or create raised dining zones
  • Raised planting beds for herbs, flowers, or low-maintenance shrubs just beyond the seating area
  • Built-in seating and BBQs tucked into the edges
  • Water features or lighting for subtle enhancements that make evenings feel special
  • Pergolas or covered areas to extend usability through more of the year
  • Connecting paths and transitions to lawns or driveways so the whole space feels unified

Think of us not just as paving contractors, but as landscape partners, helping you shape your outdoor environment.

What Makes a Patio Last?

You could lay premium sandstone today, but if it’s installed on a poorly prepared base or without proper falls for drainage, it will fail. We’ve seen it happen. That’s why our process starts long before the first slab touches the ground.

Ground Preparation & Sub-base

We excavate to full depth (usually 150–200mm depending on access and usage), remove any topsoil or organic matter, then lay a compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1. Where the ground is unstable or prone to waterlogging, we may add a geotextile membrane too, all designed to prevent future movement.

Falls & Drainage

Water has to go somewhere. We slope patios away from your house (typically 1:60 gradient), cross-fall across wider areas, and integrate drainage channels where appropriate. Permeable jointing also helps rainwater infiltrate naturally.

Laying, Edging & Jointing

All our patios are laid with full mortar beds (not just sand over concrete) and edge restraints to prevent shifting. Joints are filled with kiln-dried sand or flexible compound depending on material. For porcelain, we use bonding slurry to ensure long-term adhesion.

This isn’t cut-and-dry work. It’s craftsmanship with engineering in mind.

Our Patio Design & Installation Process

We know landscaping can feel overwhelming. So we break it down into clear steps:

1. Consultation

We visit your garden, talk through how you want to use the space, and get a feel for your style preferences and budget.

2. Design & Planning

We sketch layout options, suggest materials, and flag any site-specific considerations like tree roots or hidden services.

3. Groundworks

Excavation, sub-base, drainage, and levelling are all completed before we touch the pavers.

4. Installation

Our certified fitters lay the paving to exact tolerances.

5. Finishing & Handover

We clean, seal (if needed), and tidy the site, leaving you with a patio ready to enjoy.

Most projects take 3–7 days depending on size, but we’ll give you a clear timeframe up front.

Patios Designed for Real Gardens

Every garden brings its own challenges and opportunities. Here are a few common scenarios we handle well:

Patios for Small Gardens

We use light colours, larger formats, and simple geometry to make the space feel bigger. We avoid cluttering with too many levels or ornate borders.

Patios on Sloping Grounds

We build retaining steps and terraced zones that follow the land’s natural contour. It’s usually not neccessary to flatten everything.

Period & Traditional Homes

Natural stone, traditional bond patterns, and sympathetic detailing help the patio feel part of your homes history.

Contemporary Gardens

Clean lines, monochrome palettes, porcelain slabs, and integrated lighting create a seamless indoor/outdoor connection.

Low-Maintenance Patios

We’ll recommend materials and layouts that stay tidy with minimal effort, ideal for busy families or those downsizing.
